We have both gas and manual pull trimmer (pull rope and saw) and we can get more done with the maual. Electric is too much hassel with the cord and possibly nicking it.Gas is kinda dangerous if you are not steady with it, but fast for thicker limbs.

I'd get both for all around use.

With the electric you will always be pulling a power cord around which can or can not be a hassle. We did strip a plastic gear in our electric saw due to using on hard wood trees. The gas saw has power, but hard to start sometimes and gas and oil, but would handle the 8 inch wood. A manual saw I think would be to hard to use. I hope these pros and cons help you decide.

That's what I use in my Remington electric pole saw, I've had it for years and it's still perfect. The manual for mine actually said that I could use motor oil. I'd go for it if I were you. After all, it isn't like you're putting it to heavy use. As far as draining the reservoir to save the oil, on my saw that would be a royal pain.

Automotive oil is not viscous enough.

I always pour the bar oil back into the container after using the saw (being careful not to get dirt in it). I also do the same with the fuel.

I would say yes. Years ago, my father used to reuse the oil he saved when changing the oil from the cars. Never seemed to bother the profromance of the chain saw.

Renting is the way to go. Actual think about how much use it will get. Where will you keep it? Will it still work 3yrs from now when you need to use it again? Rent because you won't need to worry about any of the maint. If you decide you need to buy one I would buy a gas powered model over an electric model. It has more power and will last longer.
